Private Numbers

Private Numbers are a way to get your vehicle noticed, the more like a word it is or the shorter the number, the more attention it will generate. This however isn’t the only reason that people buy private numbers. Increasingly buyers are investing in a market where if you buy well you don’t seem to be able to go wrong. If you think about it, it makes sense. A similar approach to reasons to buy private numbers can be applied to investing in them as the more attention a number generates the more it is likely to be worth. The key is to purchasing well, you won’t make any money if you spend more on a number than you can sell it for and remember, there is only one of every number so anybody who is seriously interested in the private numbers you own has to make you an offer as they can’t be bought from anyone else!

The dateless, cherished numbers are what you should try and invest in; ABC 1 or AB 10 for example. The shorter the better though, if you have the money the ones with one letter and one number like H 8 or 6 Y are definitely the money makers if you can pick one up at below market value. There are always exceptions to a rule though and while the cheap and cheerful prefix number plates are not investment material as there too many equivalents (if Simon Howard Hough wanted S12 SHH but it wasn’t available he could go for L13 SHH or J16 SHH at the same price) any that spell a name or word are always worth considering. A perfect example is S73 VEN, one of the private numbers issued at a DVLA auction which has almost quadrupled in value since it was issued in 2002.
